Patient is track number 6 and one of the songs from Charlie’s sophomore album Voicenotes. It was written by Fraser Churchill, Jacob Kasher, Benjamin Johnson and Puth. Initially, the song was thought to be released at the beginning of March 2018, but rather debuted on May 11, along with the rest of the album.

The singer teased the song even on Twitter: on April 8, 2018 Puth published a tweet and immediately deleted it.
He wrote:
He wrote:
It's a clear reference to the video of Patient, directed by Colin Tilley, in which Charlie Puth plays the song with a Fender Rhodes piano." Db7 (b9) to F # min7 on a Rhodes "
Patient is the apology record from Voicenotes, and here Puth sees the error of his ways. He sees what he’s done wrong, and it’s clearly laid out in front of him for him to fix. Charlie is apologizing the girl for acting immature, and he asks her to be patient with him. Because one day, he'll become the boy she needed. The repetition in the line "Just trust me, just trust me, just trust me, baby" at the bridge emphasizes the desperateness and need illustrated in the song. It is almost as if he is saying it to himself and is convincing himself that he can be trusted by repeating the line.
