Girlfriend - Single by Charlie Puth
"Girlfriend" sees Charlie question a girl as to whether she’d want to be his girlfriend in the future. In the song, Charlie uses many elements from his music style with his soft, falsetto voice. Produced by Puth himself, it was written by him and Jacob Kasher.

"The song is about being persistent and letting someone know that your feelings for them aren't going to just go away. But rather, they're always going to be there, and you can't sleep another night until you have that person by your side every day."

Girlfriend marks Charlie Puth’s first solo single of 2020 and the lead single of his third studio album. The song was initially confirmed to be released on June 9, 2020. However, due to his focus with the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the song was delayed until June 25, 2020, with a teaser being shared four days prior to the release date.

On June 22, 2020, the song's cover art was revealed. The track was accidentally leaked in full on Twitter from a now-deleted account. Charlie officially dropped the song on June 25, 2020 at 10AM PT.
Puth performed the song on The Late Late Show with James Corden on June 25, 2020. He performed the song on the Today Show on July 3, 2020. On the 16th of July, he released the stripped-down version of the song he had performed live on the James Corden Show. On 30th July, he released the 'Haywyre Remix' of Girlfriend.
After the release of "Girlfriend," Charlie Puth dropped a merchandise collection on his online store including hoodies, shirts, sweatpants, and socks with the title of the single printed on them.
The official video was premiered on July 9th. The video shows Puth getting ready for a date at his house and then having a dance party. In a statement, Charlie stated that this was his first video where he has showed his personality wholeheartedly. He has also said that the video represents what he wants people to do when they listen to his music.
